Building the National Library of Australia.
This photo was taken in November 1966, 50 years ago!
The National Library of Australia opened in 1968. Its ‘Contemporary Classical’ style was influenced by the Parthenon in Athens. After 7 years of design and construction the final building cost $8 million plus $600,000 in furnishings and equipment. It was designed to hold the greatest collection in the world of material relating to Australia and the Australian people. It remains an iconic Canberra building on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin and is included in the Commonwealth Heritage List. We love this building but check out the cars!
